Wearables for
Emergency Room
Data Access

ALLIANCE

A global alliance defining open, secure standards for rapid emergency  access to critical patient data  stored  on wearables.

Our Mission

WERODA exists to ensure emergency clinicians can instantly access essential patient information — allergies, medications, conditions, identity, and recent vitals — directly from wearable devices using NFC and Bluetooth, even without internet connectivity.

All access is governed by strict consent rules, privacy protections, and identity-based auditability.

The Gap in Emergency Care

Millions of wearables record high-quality physiological data every day, yet none of it is accessible to emergency teams when a patient is unconscious, disoriented, or unidentified.
No shared protocol exists for secure emergency readout, identity binding, or user-controlled consent.
Critical data remains locked away when lives depend on it.

A Universal, Privacy-Respecting Standard

WERODA aims to create a world where emergency departments can retrieve a patient’s essential health information from any certified wearable — safely, instantly, and with complete respect for privacy and consent.

What WERODA Defines

A) Fast Offline Emergency Access Protocol

  • NFC tap to activate  “emergency mode.”

  • Encrypted NFC/BLE session between wearable and reader.

  • Both organizational identity and clinician identity verified.

  • Wearable enforces user consent policies locally.

B) Privacy-by-Design Consent Model

Users pre-configure:

  • Which organizations may access emergency data.

  • Which data categories can be disclosed.

  • Rules for break-glass overrides.
Consent rules are stored in the wearable’s secure element and require no cloud.

C) End-to-End Auditability

Every data access logs:

  • Organization identity

  • Individual clinician identity

  • Timestamp and duration

  • Data accessed
Logs are written back to the wearable and optionally shared with the hospital.

D) Emergency Health Wallet (On-Device)

Includes:

  • Allergies, meds, conditions

  • Emergency contacts, blood type

  • 24–72h cached vitals (HR, HRV, SpO₂, temp, arrhythmia events, sleep)

  • Consent rules + trust policy

E) Live Vital Broadcast

BLE adverts provide:

  • HR / HRV

  • Respiration

  • SpO₂

  • Temperature

  • Motion / fall status

F) Certification Framework

  • Wearable device certification

  • Reader certification  (dual-identity required)

  • Alignment with EHDS + EUDI Wallet

WERODA as the Global Root of Trust

WERODA operates as the Root of Trust for emergency access to wearable-stored health data.
The alliance issues cryptographically verifiable Organization Credentials to certified healthcare entities such as hospitals, emergency departments, and EMS providers.

Each certified organization then uses its own internal identity systems to issue Staff Credentials (for doctors, nurses, paramedics) that are linked to its WERODA Organizational Credential.

During an emergency readout, the wearable verifies:

  1. The organization’s credential — proving the reader belongs to a certified hospital or EMS provider

  2. The staff credential issued by that organization — identifying the individual accessing the data

This layered trust model ensures emergency access is:

  • secure

  • privacy-respecting

  • auditable per individual

  • independent of cloud or internet connectivity

  • aligned with EUDI Wallet and SSI principles

WERODA only needs to certify the organizations. Organizations remain in full control of their staff identity issuance.

Why This Standard Matters Today

  • EU EHDS and EUDI Wallet mandate portable patient-controlled health data.

  • Wearables measure clinically relevant vitals but offer no ER data access.

  • Emergency departments need faster, safer intake and triage.

  • Patients expect their health devices to help in life-critical situations.

  • Vendors need a neutral alliance to unify the ecosystem.

Become a Future Member

WERODA is currently assembling a limited group of founding organizations who will shape the first version of the WERODA Health Wallet Emergency Standard (HWES).
If your organization is interested in participating, you may submit an expression of interest below.
We will review all submissions as new membership tiers become available.
